Shipboard Control Cable Selection Guide for Marine Projects

Shipboard Control Cable Selection Guide for Marine Projects

Shipboard control cable is used for control, signal and instrumentation circuits on vessels and offshore units. Compared with ordinary industrial control cable, it must withstand salt air, humidity, vibration, oil contamination and stricter flame retardant requirements.

Shipboard control cable for marine control and signal circuits

Main Applications

Shipboard control cables are commonly used in engine control rooms, switchboards, distribution panels, deck machinery, pumps, valves, winches and automation systems. In offshore projects, they may also be used on platforms, FPSO units and service vessels where reliable signal transmission is required in corrosive environments.

Typical Construction

A standard marine control cable structure usually includes tinned copper conductor, XLPE or EPR insulation, optional copper screen, optional steel wire armor or steel tape armor, and LSZH or PVC outer sheath. Tinned copper is preferred because it improves corrosion resistance in marine environments.

Common specifications include 2x1.5mm2, 4x1.5mm2, 7x2.5mm2, 12x1.0mm2 and 19x1.5mm2, but the final design should follow the project drawing and electrical load requirements.

Standards to Check

For marine control and instrumentation cables, IEC 60092-376 is one of the key standards. Buyers should also check flame retardant performance, low smoke emission, halogen acid gas emission and whether the project requires NEK 606, EN, GB/T or classification society related requirements.

Certification Points

Before ordering, confirm whether the project requires CCS, DNV, ABS, LR, BV or RINA related documents. Not every cable type has the same certificate scope, so the certificate name, cable model and project requirement should be matched before production and shipment.

Selection Tips

First, confirm the rated voltage and core configuration. Second, choose screen or armor according to interference and mechanical protection needs. Third, confirm whether the installation area requires low smoke halogen free sheath, oil resistance or mud resistance. Finally, ask the supplier for TDS, test reports and available certification documents before placing an order.

Conclusion

For shipbuilding and offshore projects, shipboard control cable should be selected according to application area, mechanical stress, flame retardant requirement and certification scope. A clear specification sheet helps the supplier provide a suitable cable structure and faster quotation.
