IEC 60092-376 Shipboard Control & Instrumentation Cable Guide

IEC 60092-376 is the part of the shipboard cable standard family that governs control and instrumentation cables rated 150/250V — the wiring behind steering gear commands, pump status signals, alarm loops and every automated function on a modern vessel. Power cables get the attention; control cables carry the ship's nervous system, and this is the standard that keeps that system consistent across shipyards and suppliers. This guide explains what -376 covers, how it differs from the power cable parts, and what it means for construction and selection.

What This Standard Covers

IEC 60092-376 defines the construction, dimensions and test requirements for control and instrumentation cables with a rated voltage of 150/250V for shipboard and offshore installations. It works together with two siblings: IEC 60092-350 supplies the general construction and test framework, and IEC 60092-360 defines the insulating and sheathing materials, including the halogen-free SHF1 and SHF2 compounds. Fire and smoke performance is referenced to the IEC 60332, IEC 60754 and IEC 61034 families rather than defined inside -376 itself. The part covers multi-core control cables and, in its scope, instrumentation constructions built from pairs and triples with individual and collective screens.

Where It Is Used

Every control and monitoring circuit on a vessel falls under this voltage class: engine room automation, steering gear and rudder feedback, pump and valve status, tank level monitoring, fire and gas alarm loops, deck machinery interlocks and bridge instrumentation. Classification societies reference -376 when reviewing control cable schedules, and shipyards specify it for new building and retrofit documentation. The same constructions are widely used in offshore platforms, FPSOs and in shore-side process plants that adopt ship-grade wiring discipline.

Key Requirements

  • Rated voltage 150/250V — the U0/U designation that matches control circuits supplied at reduced voltage, not the ship's main 230/400V system

  • Conductors: stranded copper per IEC 60228, typically class 2, in cross-sections from 0.75mm² to 2.5mm² for control cores

  • Insulation and sheathing: halogen-free flame retardant compounds per -360 — SHF1 thermoplastic or SHF2 thermoset

  • Core identification: color coding or number printing, with defined combinations for large core counts

  • Instrumentation constructions: twisted pairs and triples with individual screens, plus collective screens, with capacitance and crosstalk behavior suited to signal duty

  • Tests per the -350 framework: voltage withstand, insulation resistance, dimensional and marking checks, plus flame performance to the declared IEC 60332-3 category

How It Affects Cable Construction

The 150/250V rating shapes everything downstream. Because operating voltage is low, insulation thickness is driven by mechanical protection and test requirements rather than dielectric stress — which is why control cables are slimmer than power cables of similar core size, and why bending radius and termination comfort are better. Pair and triple lay lengths are controlled to manage crosstalk for instrumentation duty; where electromagnetic compatibility matters, individual foil screens with tinned copper drain wires, collective screens, or both are added, and each screen decision changes the termination hardware and the earthing scheme. Material choice remains environmental: SHF2 thermoset for high-grade halogen-free zones, SHF1 thermoplastic for general duty. For routes exposed to mechanical risk, armored variants following the same digit logic as power cables — such as tinned copper wire braid (TCWB) or galvanized steel wire braid (GSWB) — are layered on top of the base construction.

Common Mistakes

  • Citing the wrong part. Control cables belong to -376; quoting -353 (power cables, 1kV/3kV) on a control cable data sheet signals the supplier does not know the family structure.

  • Using control cables on 230/400V circuits. The 150/250V rating is not a formality — running main-system voltage through a -376 cable is out of specification even if it "works".

  • Ignoring screening for instrumentation. A multi-core control cable is not a substitute for screened pairs on analog and communication circuits; crosstalk and EMC failures appear at commissioning, not in the warehouse.

  • Assuming fire performance is automatic. The "/SC" style LSHF designation must be backed by IEC 60332-3, IEC 60754 and IEC 61034 test reports — the standard reference alone proves nothing.

  • Mixing SHF1 and SHF2 without a reason. Both are halogen-free, but thermoplastic and thermoset behave differently in temperature, handling and price — specify deliberately.

  • Treating -376 compliance as class approval. It is a design standard; class type approval is a separate step confirmed per type.

FAQ

Q1: What does the 150/250V rating mean?
It is the standard U0/U voltage designation: 150V between conductor and earth, 250V between conductors. It matches control circuits supplied at reduced voltage from transformers. It is not intended for the ship's 230/400V main system — power circuits need the appropriate power cable types.

Q2: Control cable or instrumentation cable — which do I need?
For switching, status and interlock circuits, a multi-core control cable is sufficient. For analog signals, measurement and communication circuits, specify screened pairs or triples to control crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. We confirm the construction against your signal list.

Q3: Why are there both SHF1 and SHF2 versions?
Both compounds are halogen-free and flame retardant per IEC 60092-360. SHF1 is thermoplastic — easier to handle and terminate, typically more economical. SHF2 is thermoset — superior thermal and mechanical performance for demanding zones. The choice should follow the specification, not habit.

Q4: Do I need screens on a shipboard control cable?
Not for every circuit. Digital switching circuits often run unscreened without issue; analog, speed-feedback and communication circuits benefit from individual or collective screens. Specifying screens everywhere adds cost and termination effort without benefit.

Q5: How do I confirm a type meets -376 for my project?
Request the TDS for the specific type: it should reference IEC 60092-376 for design, IEC 60092-350 for testing and the declared flame, halogen and smoke test reports. Send your requirement list through the contact page and we confirm per type.

Request TDS or Project Support

Send your control and instrumentation cable schedule, signal list or a type code through the contact page. We will confirm each line against IEC 60092-376, verify test reports and approval availability per type, and return TDS references with the quotation.
