The certificate confirms compliance with DNV rules for classification of ships, offshore units and high speed and light craft. Products covered by this certificate are accepted for installation on all vessels classed by DNV, subject to the certificate terms and project requirements.

Construction: With and Without Inner Sheath

The CKJ and CHJ cable families are type approved in two construction variants. Certificate TAE000050E covers the version with extruded halogen free inner sheath under the braid armour, for installations where additional bedding protection is specified. This certificate, TAE000050H, covers the version without inner sheath: conductor, optional electrostatic screen, braid armour directly over the laid-up cores, and outer sheath. The no-inner-sheath variant offers smaller outer diameter, lower weight and easier termination, and is accepted wherever the installation specification does not mandate the inner covering. Both variants carry identical type designations apart from the construction detail, so the purchase specification should state which variant applies.

Approved Cable Types

The certificate covers sixteen type designations, all with tinned stranded copper class 2 conductors, XLPE insulation, optional electrostatic screen, copper wire braid or galvanized steel wire braid armour, and SHF1 or SHF2 outer sheath.

• CKJ86/SC, CKJ96/SC, CKJ85/SC, CKJ95/SC: shipboard control cables, 2 to 37 cores in sizes from 0.5mm2 to 2.5mm2, for example 7x1.5, 12x1.5, 19x1.5, 24x1.5, 30x1.5 and 37x1.5

• CKJP86/SC, CKJP96/SC, CKJP85/SC, CKJP95/SC: screened pair versions of the control cables

• CHJ86/SC, CHJ96/SC, CHJ85/SC, CHJ95/SC: shipboard communication cables in pairs, triples and quads, sizes from 0.5mm2 to 2.5mm2, up to 37 pairs

• CHJP86/SC, CHJP96/SC, CHJP85/SC, CHJP95/SC: individually and collectively screened pair versions for instrumentation duty

Standards and Testing

The type approval is based on the following standards, with type test reports TN24-4514E through TN24-4521E referenced in the certificate:

• IEC 60092-350: general construction and test methods of power, control and instrumentation cables for shipboard and offshore applications

• IEC 60092-376: control and instrumentation cables for rated voltage 150/250V

• IEC 60092-360: insulating and sheathing materials for shipboard and offshore cables

• IEC 60332-3-22 Category A: bunched cable flame retardance

• IEC 60754-1 and IEC 60754-2: halogen free performance

• IEC 60684-2 clause 45.2: low level fluorine content below 0.1%

• IEC 61034-1/2: low smoke emission, light transmittance above 60%

The requirements of SOLAS Amendments Chapter II-1, Part D, Regulation 45.5.2 for limiting fire propagation along bunches of cables are fulfilled without additional measures.

Application

This certificate applies to shipboard control and instrumentation cables for general power, control and instrumentation circuits on DNV classed vessels where the no-inner-sheath construction is accepted by the installation specification: machinery space cabling, deck machinery control, automation and alarm systems, and communication networks. For fire resistant emergency circuits, the NSC types under TAE000050F apply instead.

Both certificates cover identical CKJ and CHJ SC type designations at 150/250V. TAE000050E covers the construction with extruded inner sheath under the armour; TAE000050H covers the construction without inner sheath. Electrical performance and test standards are identical.

Q2: When should the inner sheath variant be specified?

Where the installation specification, class notation or owner standard requires bedding under the armour, specify the TAE000050E construction. Where it is not mandated, the no-inner-sheath variant of TAE000050H offers smaller diameter and easier installation.
