-
Issued by: DNV, local unit Nanjing NB & CMC
-
DNV Job ID: 262.1-040955-1
The certificate confirms compliance with DNV rules for classification of ships, offshore units and high speed and light craft. Products covered by this certificate are accepted for installation on all vessels classed by DNV, subject to the certificate terms and project requirements.
Approved Cable Types
The certificate covers sixteen fire resistant type designations. The enabling construction is a mica tape layer over the conductor under the XLPE insulation, which maintains circuit integrity during fire while the halogen free outer sheath limits flame spread — the NSC designation combines both behaviors in one cable. All types use tinned stranded copper class 2 conductors, optional electrostatic screen, extruded inner covering on the 95 and 96 types, copper wire braid or galvanized steel wire braid armour, and SHF1 or SHF2 outer sheath.

Fire Performance: IEC 60331 Circuit Integrity
The defining feature of this certificate is fire resistance tested to IEC 60331-1 and IEC 60331-2: circuit integrity under fire with shock at a minimum temperature of 830°C, maintained for 120 minutes on cable types within the scope of the test reports. This is the performance required for emergency circuits — fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire pumps and emergency shutdown systems — where the cable must keep working while the fire burns around it. For the difference between this fire resistant behavior and the SC flame retardant types, see our fire resistant vs flame retardant cable comparison.
Standards and Testing
The type approval is based on the following standards, with type test reports TN24-4514E through TN24-4521E referenced in the certificate:
-
IEC 60092-350: general construction and test methods of power, control and instrumentation cables for shipboard and offshore applications
-
IEC 60092-376: control and instrumentation cables for rated voltage 150/250V
-
IEC 60092-360: insulating and sheathing materials for shipboard and offshore cables
-
IEC 60332-3-22 Category A: bunched cable flame retardance
-
IEC 60331-1 and IEC 60331-2: circuit integrity under fire with shock at 830°C, 120 minutes
-
IEC 60754-1 and IEC 60754-2: halogen free performance
-
IEC 60684-2 clause 45.2: low level fluorine content below 0.1%
-
IEC 61034-1/2: low smoke emission, light transmittance above 60%
The requirements of SOLAS Amendments Chapter II-1, Part D, Regulation 45.5.2 for limiting fire propagation along bunches of cables are fulfilled without additional measures.
Application
This certificate applies to fire resistant shipboard control and instrumentation cables for emergency and critical circuits on DNV classed vessels: fire detection and alarm loops, emergency lighting, fire pump and emergency shutdown circuits, and bridge and engine control systems where circuit integrity during fire is mandatory. Screened pair versions serve interference sensitive emergency instrumentation networks.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between TAE000050F and TAE000050E?
Both certificates cover the same CKJ and CHJ cable families at 150/250V with the same size ranges. TAE000050F covers the NSC fire resistant types with mica tape and IEC 60331 circuit integrity testing at 830°C for 120 minutes, while TAE000050E covers the SC flame retardant halogen free types without fire resistance.
Q2: Which fire resistant circuits require these cable types?
Fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire pumps, emergency shutdown and other circuits that must remain operational during a fire, as required by class rules and SOLAS for emergency systems.
Q3: What size range is covered?
Control cables cover 2 to 37 cores and communication cables cover 1 to 37 pairs, triples or quads, in conductor sizes from 0.5mm2 to 2.5mm2.
Q4: When is this certificate valid?
The certificate was issued on 7 January 2025 and is valid until 6 January 2030, subject to DNV periodical assessment after 2 years and 3.5 years.
Q5: Are both screened and unscreened types available?
Yes. The certificate covers unscreened CKJ and CHJ types, pair screened CKJP and CHJP types, and individually plus collectively screened versions for instrumentation duty.
